From the Obituary notice in the paper the following information is given. Leonard M. Krull, 78 of 9 Vinal Hill Road, a founder and former chairman of the board of Bay State Abrasive Products, Co, now Avco Bay State died at his home. He was born in Molkwerum, the Netherlands, the son of Maynard J. and Cornelia (Schultze) Krull, and came to the United Stated at the age of five. He was one of eight children and grew up on a farm in East Douglas where he completed his early schooling. As a boy, he liked to tinker with water wheels, telegraphy, steam engins and electricity. Mr. Krull attended Mt. Hermon School, Northfield for two years. He recieved a bachelor of science degree from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in 1916. From graduation until 1921 he was sales engineer for the Norton Co,. Worcester. Two of these years were spent in French, British and Dutch Guiana searching for bauxite for the Norton Co. In November 1922, with two associates, Mr. Krull came to Westboro to found the Bay State Abrasive Products Co., since 1965 the Avco Bay State Co. In those early days, Mr. Krull worked as carpenter, treasurer and salesman of the new firm. He divided his time between the office, located in the old converted Westboro Power plant, and traveling through New England in his Model T. Ford as a salesman. He was also product application engineer in charge of accounting, and headed up financial methods in the office. As time went on, Bay State Abrasives grew until it became the third largest industry in its field in the United States. In 1949, Mr Krull became chaairman of the board of directors, and in 1958, honorary chairman. He retired in 1956. Mr Krull was a leader in civic, educational and religious organizations. also. For 17 years he served on the Westboro town finance committee, He was also on the board of apeals, He was the first president of the Westboro Kiwanis club, a former vice president and director of the First National Bank of Westboro and a trustee of the Westboro Savings Bank. He was an active member of the Evangelical Congregatinal Church, where he taught Sunday School for 16 years and served on various committees. In 1950 he was elected to the board of trustees of Worcester Polytechnic Institute, and later wqs made an honorary member of the board. In 1967 he was awarded an honorary doctor of engineering degree by WPI. In 1958 Mr. Krull served as director of the Worcester District chapter of the Massachusetts Heart Association. He was the founder of a trust in his name which grants scholarships annually to graduates of Westboro High School going to college. Funeral services will be hld at 2 PM Thursdy in the Evangelical Congregatinal church. Burial will be in Pine Grove cemetery. NOTE: Westboro is the old name and used by folks who have lived there a long time and used by the town officials. New arrivals in town use the name Westborough. Either is correct. |
