Notities: |
-Persoon | Veelal wordt de man op het portret betiteld als Ferdinand Bol. Men acht echter bewezen dat Petrus Sylvius is afgebeeld.
This splendid sheet is notable for the quality of the impression, its distinguished provenance and the identity of the sitter, who has been convincingly identified as Petrus Sylvius, because his name is inscribed on the verso of this impression in a 17th century hand. As explained by D. de Hoop-Scheffer (in Liber Amicorum Karel J. Boon, Amsterdam, 1974, pp. 96 - 101). Petrus Sylvius was the son of Pastor Jan Cornelius Sylvius, whose portrait was twice etched by Rembrandt (B. 266 and 284), and who was the uncle and guardian of Rembrandt’s wife, Saskia. The closeness of Rembrandt to the Sylvius family would give credence to the execution of a portrait of the young theological scholar, seated in his study with his pile of books nearby. |
